On Earth Day, the World Looks to Be Greener

April 22nd is Earth Day, when ecology minded citizens around the world are a little bit more environmentally conscientious, even if it´s for a single day. We at Zojirushi support being green every day, and we want to make it easy for our customers to think that way too.

This month´s recipes feature our NEW Thermal Vacuum Cooking Pot, which uses insulated heat to slow cook your food. Unlike conventional slow cookers, this pot first heats food directly on a stovetop, then finishes the cooking process by insulating the hot food so that it cooks itself. It is truly cooking with recycled heat!

Earth Day was established in 1970 by a U.S. senator who originally conceived it as a way to educate American college students about ecology. It is now regarded as the forerunner of the modern ecological movement, and the concept has grown in popularity around the globe. Earth Day is observed in 175 countries today, and is coordinated by the nonprofit Earth Day Network.

The Network´s theme is "A billion acts of green", a campaign that inspires and solicits pledges from people to get involved in their own ways, to perform green acts in their everyday lives. People can make a difference just by changing to energy saving light bulbs or eliminating the use of pesticides and toxic chemicals.

1970 was also when the EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency, was established by then President Richard Nixon to protect human health and the environment. Today the EPA oversees pesticide usage, monitors fuel economy with car manufacturers, measures our drinking water for safety, and much more.

Did you know that the average American office worker uses about 500 disposable cups every year? Styrofoam cups, which are nearly impossible to recycle, contribute 22.75 pounds of non-biodegradable waste per year just by one person buying one cup of coffee a day. The EPA says that the foam coffee cup you drank this morning will still be sitting in a landfill somewhere 500 years from now.

California spends about 25 million dollars each year to send plastic bags to our landfills, and 8.5 million more to clean plastic bag litter from our streets. And plastic bags do not biodegrade; they only break down into smaller particles that contaminate our soil and water. Less than 1 percent of plastic bags are recycled each year.

In ten years, bottled water consumption has doubled in the U.S. We produce over a million tons of plastic bottles each year, and over 75% of them end up in our landfills. When you buy a bottle of water, you are buying the bottling, packaging, shipping and marketing of the water; only 10% is the water itself.
