Along with <em>okonomiyaki<\/em>, <em>takoyaki<\/em> and <em>yakisoba<\/em>, freshly grilled corn is a must when attending a <em>natsumatsuri<\/em>, or summer festival.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine this\u2026 colorful festivals, often full of people dressed in <em>yukata<\/em>, a type of <em>kimono<\/em> worn in summer, with beautifully decorated floats, or festival lanterns\u2026 all crowded together in the hot days and nights of August. Surrounding festival goers are specialty food stalls, and the delicious smell brings additional excitement to the festive atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/toumorokoshi03.jpg\" alt=\"toumorokoshi03\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Making grilled corn is a quintessentially Japanese process\u2014simple ingredients prepared in careful, thoughtful ways. The husk and silk of each ear of corn is stripped away and tied at the end of the ear to make a handle. The cleaned corn is placed on a well-oiled grill and usually basted with soy sauce for a wonderful savory flavor. We\u2019ve even had <em>yaki-tomorokoshi<\/em> with a sweet <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.justonecookbook.com\/grilled-corn-with-miso-butter\/\">honey <em>miso<\/em> butter<\/a><\/span><\/span> made of soy sauce, <em>miso<\/em> paste, butter, honey and salt.<\/p>\n<p>Festivals are great places to celebrate and to eat! Other popular street foods include grilled squid and steamed potatoes with butter as well as candied apples, sponge cakes, crepes and of course, cotton candy!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2214\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2214\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2214 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/toumorokoshi02.jpg\" alt=\"toumorokoshi02\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yum!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some of the most popular summer festivals that happened this month are the <em>Akita Kanto Matsuri<\/em>, the <em>Sendai<\/em> <em>Tanabata Matsuri<\/em>, the <em>Yamagata<\/em> <em>Hanagasa Matsuri<\/em>, and the <em>Aomori<\/em> <em>Nebuta Matsuri<\/em>. Each festival is unique, but they all share a theme of praying for a successful farming season, prosperity and progress and the fulfillment of wishes.
