It\u2019s eaten all year long, with unique sweet or savory variations made for special occasions.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dango<\/em> in its most basic form is made from sweet glutinous rice flour and water. The dough is shaped into round balls which are boiled until cooked. The cooked <em>dango<\/em> are cooled in cold water and then skewered, ready to be grilled or basted and garnished. Different variations of <em>dango<\/em> are popular during certain events, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.justonecookbook.com\/mitarashi-dango\/\"><em>Mitarashi Dango<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span> is eaten throughout the year. It is said that <em>Mitarashi Dango <\/em>originated from the <em>Kamo Mitarashi Tea House<\/em> in Kyoto, and traditionally consists of five white dumplings, skewered on bamboo sticks, and is served with a sticky sweet soy sauce glaze. These <em>dango<\/em> can easily be found at festivals, food fairs and night markets!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2274\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2274\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2274 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/dango01.jpg\" alt=\"dango01\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Mitarashi dango<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Hanami dango <\/em>(pictured in main photo)\u00a0is another popular form of this delicious dish. Made during the cherry blossom viewing season in the spring, <em>hanami dango<\/em> consist of three colored dumplings\u2013one green, one pink and one white\u2013skewered on bamboo and served as part of <em>hanami bento<\/em>. The tradition of eating these <em>dango<\/em> during the bloom of cherry blossoms dates back to the 8<sup>th<\/sup> century!<\/p>\n<p><em>Anko dango<\/em> are white dumplings topped with sweetened red bean paste and <em>yaki dango<\/em> are white dumplings grilled over an open flame and served with a savory sauce.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2276\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2276 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/dango03.jpg\" alt=\"dango03\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Anko dango<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In September, <em>Tsukimi Dango<\/em> are prepared as part of the <em>Jugoya<\/em> celebration, during which Japanese people commemorate the harvest, decorate their homes and witness the Harvest Moon. <em>Tsukimi dango<\/em>, meaning \u201cmoon viewing dumplings\u201d, are plain white dumplings. Their glossy, white, round surfaces resemble the bright moon. Families celebrate this time by setting up a small table near a window or on a porch. <em>Tsukimi dango, <\/em>arranged in a pyramid shape on a plate, are placed on the table along with <em>sato-imo<\/em>, or taro root. Sprays of pampas grass, or <em>susuki, <\/em>are also displayed on the table, as they resemble the rice plant.
