It\u2019s pure comfort food, full of savory ingredients that have soaked up hot seasoned broth, perfect for the cold months of winter.<\/p>\n<p><em>Oden<\/em> is enjoyed by everyone in Japan, from children on their way home from school to homeward bound working professionals stopping at street vendors for <em>oden<\/em> and <em>sake<\/em>. When made at home, <em>oden<\/em> includes special ingredients loved by each family member. One of the characteristic ingredient is <em>konnyaku<\/em>, a jellied yam cake. Those who enjoy <em>oden<\/em> choose the ingredients to add to their bowl, sometimes adding <em>chikuwa<\/em> (fish cake), ground fish balls, <em>kinchaku <\/em>(fried tofu pouches), daikon radish, boiled eggs or vegetables like cabbage and potatoes. <em>Oden<\/em> is best when garnished with hot Japanese mustard.<\/p>\n<p><em>Oden<\/em> is a cross between a <em>nimono<\/em>, or simmered dish, and <em>nabemono<\/em>, or hot pot. The name <em>oden<\/em> is derived from <em>dengaku<\/em>, which refers to pieces of tofu and <em>konnyaku <\/em>skewered, basted with <em>miso<\/em> paste and grilled. <em>Dengaku<\/em> was typically served during colder months, and around the time of the Muromachi Period (1336 \u2013 1573), the dish was modified to be simmered in seasoned broth.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2379\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2379\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2379 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/oden01.jpg\" alt=\"oden01\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2379\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A shop advertises <em>oden <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Oden<\/em> is prepared with variations depending on the region in Japan. In Tokyo and its environs, the broth is made from <em>dashi<\/em> and <em>koikuchi shoyu<\/em>, or dark soy sauce, and is typically salty in flavor.
