She\u2019s going to be 21 this year, which means (in California anyway) she can legally:<br \/>\n\u2022Drink<br \/>\n\u2022Gamble<br \/>\n\u2022Rent a car<br \/>\n\u2022Buy weed<br \/>\n\u2022Adopt a child<br \/>\n\u2022Buy a gun<br \/>\n\u2022Buy tobacco<\/p>\n<p>Yikes, no wonder I\u2019m losing my hair so fast! Who was it that said \u201cWith great power comes great responsibility?\u201d I think it\u2019s been credited to a a bunch of people throughout history, but most recently I heard it from Uncle Ben (you geeks know who I\u2019m talking about). She\u2019s got a good head on her shoulders though, so as a parent all you can do is trust your kids to always do the right thing.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate I wanted to make her some of her favorites. She loves <em>takoyaki<\/em> and <em>yaki-onigiri,<\/em> so I got to thinking I could take out the <em>takoyaki<\/em> pan and try a few things\u2014maybe even to interest y\u2019all?<\/p>\n<p>So I realize not everyone likes <em>tako,<\/em> or octopus, but it would be a shame to never try the creamy goodness of this dish. In the past I made a few variations of <em>takoyaki<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/tako-pa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>using this pan<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, but they used completely different types of dough in order to match the style of the dish. To me, the best part of <em>takoyaki<\/em> is biting into these tongue-burning little morsels. I double-dare you to pop one whole into your mouth right off the griddle. Here are a few variations you can try as substitutes for octopus, so you can still enjoy the original batter.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve got 3 kinds of <em>naniyaki<\/em> here. Sorry, that\u2019s my word for \u201cwhat\u2019s-in-these-yaki\u201d. I\u2019m not the first one to experiment with <em>takoyaki<\/em> fillings, but I might be the first to make up my own name for it. BUT the hot dogs, cheese and <em>kimchi<\/em> all had their own flavor once you got to the insides, so I would have to say that this is great way to enjoy <em>takoyaki<\/em> without the octopus. What I should have done is go for the ketchup and mustard on the hot dog one\u2014maybe next time. But what about a literal \u201crice ball\u201d? I tried this with a couple of pre-rolled rice ball variations. I figured there\u2019s no way that grilled rice forms itself into a little ball like <em>takoyaki<\/em> batter does, but if it starts out as a ball shape, then the <em>takoyaki<\/em> pan can do the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Here are my rice ball fillings: corn and rice blended with some <em>shoyu<\/em> and butter on the left, and a tuna mayo mixture with cheese, <em>nori<\/em> and scallions on the right. At our house, we sometimes mix tuna out of a can like this and eat it as a topping over hot rice. Trust me, it works.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rice-ball-ingredients.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5862 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rice-ball-ingredients.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rice-ball-ingredients.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rice-ball-ingredients-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rice-ball-ingredients-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rice-ball-ingredients-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is coming along nicely on the <em>takoyaki<\/em> pan. I\u2019m brushing it with <em>shoyu+mirin<\/em> glaze, and turning them over periodically. One warning if you do this\u2014it took a long time to grill. Maybe I was too careful of not burning it so the temp was too low, but I think <em>yaki-onigiri<\/em> takes a long time anyway. Tender and fluffy rice on the inside, grilled crispness on the outside. <em>Yaki-onigiri<\/em> in bite sized balls. What should we call these? <em>Yaki-tama?<\/em> Maybe this is already a thing\u2014I don\u2019t know. If you\u2019re wondering, the tuna version was very, very good. The corn version could have used more <em>shoyu<\/em> glaze, but the combination was on point.
