If you\u2019re one of those people who can\u2019t understand the point of plain white rice, <em>do not<\/em> reach for the soy sauce PLEASE!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Jambalaya<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is totally random for a rice cooker, I know, but I thought it might be fun to try. This was from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecookingguy.com\/recipes\/mixed-rice-cooker-jambalaya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sam The Cooking Guy<\/strong><\/a>, an equally random Google find. What I liked about this one though, was that you stick everything in the rice cooker and push \u201cSTART\u201d and that was it. You know me, I <em>love<\/em> the \u201cSTART\u201d button when it\u2019s the only task I have to do.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the rice cooker recipes, this one was the most extravagant because of all the ingredients, but still, worth it for what you\u2019re getting. I think this style of Jambalaya is supposed to be on the mushy side anyway, but I feel it might have been a little too much because of the type of rice I used. The other kind is called Red Jambalaya and is the Creole version, specifically associated with the city of New Orleans. But it\u2019s also known as Chicken Rice, and it\u2019s a staple (at least it was when I was growing up) in most Japanese homes. It\u2019s basically the inside rice part of <em>omurice<\/em> (omelet rice) that I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve heard about. Guess what? If you haven\u2019t mastered the art of frying the paper-thin scrambled egg that\u2019s needed to cover the <em>omurice,<\/em> just make Ketchup Rice in your rice cooker and you won\u2019t be missing a thing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-plated-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9304\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-plated-copy-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"ketchup rice plated\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-plated-copy-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-plated-copy-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-plated-copy-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-plated-copy-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-plated-copy-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I followed the recipe from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justonecookbook.com\/rice-cooker-japanese-ketchup-rice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Just One Cookbook<\/strong><\/a> for this one. Pretty straightforward with ingredients I already had on hand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-ingredients-copy-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-ingredients-copy-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"ingredients for ketchup rice\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-ingredients-copy-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-ingredients-copy-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-ingredients-copy-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-ingredients-copy-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.zojirushi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/chicken-rice-ingredients-copy-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Everything goes into the pot, but you need to layer the chicken and onions on top and not mix it up until the rice cooks through its cycle. You can mix it up after it\u2019s done and let the keep warm function steam it until you get perfect Ketchup Rice. Rice freezes well in general as you know, so this is no different. That\u2019s what everyone calls <em>Inari Sushi<\/em> if you\u2019re Japanese-American. It\u2019s because of the brown-colored fried tofu wrapping of course. I think it\u2019s a great way to do a food activity with your kids.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve never tried <em>inari sushi,<\/em> you should. The sweetness of the fried tofu balances out with the vinegary <em>sushi<\/em> rice, and the ingredients make a great alternative to fish. It\u2019s a simple, inexpensive <em>sushi<\/em> choice. See? It\u2019s now March and we\u2019re still keeping our New Year\u2019s resolution to save money.
