Brown rice has long been considered a superfood because of its high nutritional value and fiber rich content. Quinoa is a relative newcomer to North Americans, even though it’s been a staple in South America for literally centuries. Which do you like?
Brown rice has that nutty, chewy texture that people love, and if cooked with a proper rice cooker, it can still be very tender. And there’s no question its status as a whole grain gives it certain health benefits as certified by this FDA approved statement: “Diets rich in whole-grain foods and other plant foods and low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers.” Only 100% whole-grain products are allowed to use this statement on their packaging.
And since it’s as versatile as regular white rice, the recipes are endless—you can simply go to our recipe page and see the varieties we came up with; just think what you can discover on your own!
Quinoa, on the other hand, isn’t really a grain at all, even though we throw it into the grains category because it has similar nutritional properties and it’s cooked and eaten in the same way. Quinoa is the edible seed of a plant that has been harvested since the ancient Incas, over 4,000 years ago high in the Andes Mountains.
Quinoa got its reputation as a superfood because of its high protein content, gluten free eating, high fiber, low calories, and its abundance of minerals and vitamins. It cooks relatively quickly and can (and has) been used in soups, salads, in cereals, as pasta, in desserts, even drinks. It is even being researched by NASA as an ideal food for long duration space flights.
One thing is certain, any kind of “superfood” is good for your body, so if it comes down to personal preference, you obviously can’t go wrong.
