As we welcome the new year, it’s the perfect time to embrace traditions that promote health and well-being. In Japan, Nanakusa-gayu, or Seven-Herb Porridge, is a beloved dish enjoyed on January 7 as a way to reset the body after the indulgence of the holiday season. This simple rice porridge, known as Okayu or congee, is easy to make, gentle on the stomach, and steeped in symbolism.

At Zojirushi, we believe in making traditional dishes accessible to modern kitchens. With our rice cookers and electric skillets, preparing a comforting bowl of Nanakusa-gayu is effortless, allowing you to focus on the joy of sharing this nourishing meal with family and friends. Let us dive into dive in on how to make porridge, and the history of Nanakusa-Gayu.

The History and Meaning of Nanakusa-Gayu

For centuries, Nanakusa-gayu has been an integral part of Japanese New Year celebrations. This simple rice porridge, or Okayu (also known as congee in other Asian cuisines), is infused with seven fresh herbs, each believed to bring health, longevity, and good fortune. These herbs—such as parsley, shepherd’s purse, and chickweed—symbolize renewal and a connection to nature’s bounty as the new year begins.

Beyond its symbolic meaning, Nanakusa-gayu is celebrated for its simplicity. The creamy, soft texture is gentle on the stomach, making it an ideal dish after the feasting of New Year’s celebrations. The vibrant herbs not only add flavor but also provide vital nutrients, making this tradition as nourishing for the soul as it is for the body.

Some of our rice cooker models have a recipe in the manual, but we don’t for the electric skillet. There are some wonderful recipe sites that offer the recipe with a quick online search! Please let us know how you like it if you try one out!
