6 Takoyaki on the plate

The Zojirushi Takoyaki Plate EA-YBC01 is an incredibly versatile tool that goes far beyond its original purpose. While it’s perfect for crafting golden, crispy Takoyaki, this plate can also inspire countless other savory and sweet creations. With its nonstick surface and thoughtful design, our Takoyaki Plate invites creativity in the kitchen, making every meal an opportunity to try something new. Ready on to find out how!

The History of Takoyaki

Takoyaki is a beloved Japanese street food that originated in Osaka, a city known for its rich culinary traditions. The dish was first created in the 1930s by a street vendor named Tomekichi Endo, who wanted to put a unique twist on traditional octopus dishes. Inspired by a savory pancake-like snack called “akashiyaki,” Endo experimented by filling batter with octopus and other ingredients, then grilling them into round balls. The final result? Takoyaki! This delicious snack was such a hit, it quickly became a favorite in Osaka and beyond.

Like the dish itself, Zojirushi—a company based in Osaka—is deeply rooted in the city’s food culture and culinary innovation. Our popular Takoyaki Plate makes it easier than ever to enjoy this delicious specialty with minimal effort—bringing a piece of Osaka’s vibrant street food scene directly to your kitchen.

How To Make Takoyaki

These golden, round snacks are traditionally made from a batter of wheat flour, dashi, and eggs, filled with tender octopus, tempura flakes, green onions, and pickled ginger. The balls are then cooked until crisp on the outside and soft inside, topped with Takoyaki sauce, mayonnaise, seaweed flakes, and bonito flakes. Whether it’s a family dinner or a fun gathering, Takoyaki is always a crowd-pleaser!

With the Zojirushi Takoyaki Plate, creating authentic Takoyaki at home is simple. Its precise design ensures even cooking, while the nonstick coating makes flipping each piece effortless. The result? Perfectly golden, crispy Takoyaki balls every time! Try making Takoyaki with this recipe for a cozy night in or a fun family activity that everyone will enjoy.

Beyond Takoyaki – Savory Bites

The Takoyaki Plate isn’t just for Takoyaki. Its unique shape makes it perfect for crafting other savory bites. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Mini Shumai Dumplings: These bite-sized dumplings, filled with pork, shrimp, or vegetables, are a delicious twist on a classic. Shumai, also known as “siumai,” are a staple in Chinese dim sum cuisine.  The plate’s even heating creates perfectly cooked shumai, making it a creative and handy alternative to traditional steamers. Impress your guests with this twist on a classic shumai recipe.
