YinYang Pot showing green chili verde and cowboy chili

Happy Father’s Day y’all! What do you call it when Batman skips church? “Christian Bale” What do computers eat? “Microchips” What did the drummer name his twin daughters? “Anna One, Anna Two” I love chili. I eat the canned stuff all the time when I’m scrounging around the house for something to eat for lunch. But I’ll only have it if we have leftover rice cuz well…what am I supposed to do, crackers?? This was our self-serve chili spread on Father’s Day. The nice thing about the Zojirushi Yin Yang Pot is that it can be a wonderful warming station for dishes like this on your dining table. You don’t always have to cook right in the pot.

Chili station featuring 2 kinds of chili

Fun party idea, right? Please don’t come after me for not having tortillas for the chili verde. Tortillas aren’t an everyday item we have in the house—we’re Asian after all. But we love chili verde just the same!

Since Father’s Day is all about me, I got to choose smash burgers for lunch—they came out pretty good, even though we didn’t successfully smash them very well.

We have this smaller Zojirushi Electric Griddle when we don’t have to cook up a whole lot of food for just the 3 of us. It’s plenty big enough for a couple of burgers and sausages, and I like this one because you can buy the Takoyaki plate for it. (I’ll let you know when we use it again.)

on the griddle: smash burger patties with melting cheese, Polish sausages, frying onions and red peppers

This is a Polish dog grilled fajita style, topped with onions and peppers. I think if we had bacon we could’ve wrapped them in bacon and made them real street food style. Sorry, I got no Polish dog jokes—and I can’t do any German sausage jokes—they’re the wurst.

What do you call a vegan hot dog? A cucumber.

I did this Pepper Rice a few years ago in one of my posts, but for this Father’s Day I changed it up and did a Kimchi Beef Pepper Rice. If you have a Pepper Lunch restaurant in your area you should definitely try it. Watch this video with the sound on!

If you want to know what the paper is for, it’s to keep the oil from splattering on your clothes when they bring it to your table. This is all you need to make the Kimchi Beef Pepper Rice. The better your kimchi (meaning sour) the better this is going to taste. Get some by a known brand from your local Korean market.

Pepper Rice prep ingredients: beef, sauce, butter, green onion, kimchee, corn, grated cheese

Let’s add the beef and get started!

In case you were wondering, Pepper Lunch features 4 kinds of sauces sitting on their tables. Their most popular is the Honey Brown Sauce, a slightly sweet and savory sauce that starts to caramelize when it hits the griddle and helps sear and crisp the rice, which is what you want with this dish. At home, the Zojirushi Electric Skillet does a great job of crisping the rice; then buy some tangy teppanyaki sauce from your Asian market. Boost the flavor with some garlic and you’re ready for some sizzling Kimchi Beef Pepper Rice.

The cooking part is the most fun.

Then we did some banana bread. Actually we do banana bread all the time. This was just an excuse to get one last Dad joke in. How do bananas answer the phone? “Yellow?”

I hope Dad got his favorites this month…he deserves it!
